Current statistics show that 1 in every 166 children are born with autism.  With that said, autism is one of the nation’s fastest-growing childhood disorders.  More children are diagnosed with autism than with Leukemia, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, Juvenile Diabetes and Pediatric Aids COMBINED.

This past April, Beta Sigma Beta and Pi Beta Phi teamed up with the “Cure Autism Now” Foundation (CAN) to host a 5K Race/3K Walk to benefit CAN.  On April 1^st, 2006, over 550 participants and State College “celebrities” joined forces to raise over $90,000 in the event’s inaugural year.  With Steve Jones, “The Radio Voice of Penn State Football” on hand as the honorary chairman, the event gained a significant amount of attention in the community.  In its inaugural year, Magnum Broadcasting partnered with us to promote the event on four different radio stations in the Central PA area throughout the month of March.  Two of Penn State’s most widely recognized assistant football coaches, Tom Bradley and Larry Johnson, Sr., auctioned off dinner with themselves at The Tavern as part of the event’s online auction.

On April 14, 2007, the 2^nd annual “We Are…Curing Autism Now 5K Race/3K Walk” will take center stage in the State College community once again.  The 2^nd annual event will offer local business a variety of different ways to become involved.  We look forward to discussing the ways that your business can become involved in the fight against autism here in State College. 

With your help, the 2^nd annual “We Are…Curing Autism Now 5K Race/3K Walk” will continue to grow, develop, and become a significant part of State College and Penn State tradition.
